Is There a difference between light or heavy haircutting scissors

August 19, 2024

There is a lot that goes into making the perfect pair of hair cutting scissors. Of course as hair stylists we want a good sharp pair of scissors, that look good and feel good when we use them. There is so much more to consider, and that is why we are here ! We are here to help you choose the best hair scissors for you.. and here is how!

Scissor Ergonomics

Ergonomics is a word that you have probably seen a lot during your hairdressing scissors search. It is very important to consider ergonomics when you are choosing your next pair of hair cutting scissors. Ergonomics is designing products and systems to help the people that use them. So scissor ergonomics is the design of scissors to help the hairdresser! Doesn't that sound great ! Your scissors are designed to help you !

Your Scissor Handle

The handle of your hair cutting scissors is the most important part of your ergonomic scissors. Over the years hair cutting scissor companies, such as Scissor Tech have worked hard to ensure that scissors are designed ergonomically to help prolong a hair stylist's career.

Older styled hairdressing scissors were designed to be used with your thumb and middle finger. The two finger holes were placed directly above each other. Your thumb would have to sit all the way back to be completely under your middle finger. This often led to pain in the thumb, hand and wrist. Cutting hair like this day in and day out not only led to pain, but then injuries, such as carpal tunnel syndrome. Luckily things are different these days in the hairdressing industry, and we are more aware of how to help prevent these injuries.

You'll notice that most hairdressing scissors are designed with an offset handle. These opposing grip scissors have you cutting hair with your thumb and ring finger. The finger holes are no longer set directly above each other, instead the thumb holes are brought forward, to an offset position. This offset handle helps to keep your thumb closest to its most natural position, preventing hand fatigue, pain and injury.

You will also come across the crane handle. These crane handle scissors designed to prevent injury to your hand, wrist, elbow and even your shoulder. The crane handle drops your thumb down more and has a straight blade. To use these hairdressing scissors properly you will need to cut with your elbow at your side. This helps to prevent any strain or injury by keeping your body position as natural as possible.

Then of course is our most ergonomically designed scissor, swivel scissors. Swivel scissors have a 180 degree rotating thumb hole. They are designed to be able to always move your hands and arms to the best, most comfortable position for you. While learning to cut hair with swivel hair cutting scissors may be a little more work, it is worth it in the end for all the comfort they provide.

It is also important to note that a well designed, ergonomic scissor handle will also be lightweight. A lightweight handle will help prevent hand fatigue and prevent pain.

Steel

You have probably also thought about what steel you want your hairdressing scissors to be made from. High quality steel is important when creating a great pair of hair cutting scissors. The most popular steel used in hair cutting shears is Japanese steel. Japanese steel is strong, durable and lightweight.

There are different grades of Japanese steel. They are rated on the Rockwell hardness scale, which will tell you the quality and strength of the steel. We start with 440C which is a great japanese steel that is quite affordable. Then there is the top of the scale, VG10 Steel that is the strongest and best quality scissor steel out there. Some of the best hair shears are made from VG10 Steel and they guarantee a lightweight and durable hairdressing scissor great for advanced cutting techniques such as slice cutting and point cutting.

Having quality hair cutting shears not only means lightweight steel but also steel that will hold its sharp edge longer. This is important in helping to prevent hand fatigue and injury as well. Cutting your client's hair with dull hair shears is not only bad for their hair, but bad for your hands.

Scissor Lengths

It is also important to determine what length hairdressing shears will be best, and most comfortable for you. Hair scissors length range from 4.5 inches to 8 inches. You can determine what length of scissors you need based on your hand size and/ or the different hair cutting techniques you use most.

To determine which scissor length will fit your hand best, place your scissors in your non- dominant hand. Have the thumb finger hole touch your palm at the base of the thumb. The tip of the blade should touch between the first and second knuckle of your middle finger.

While it is important you use a comfortable size scissor for your cutting, we recommend considering which cutting techniques you do most when determining a length. Using the right length scissor for the right technique can make your job easier. If you are a hair stylist who uses a lot of blunt cutting techniques you may want to consider using a pair of long hair scissors. Longer scissors range in size from 5.5 Inches to 8 inches. They are often known as barbering scissors, as they are the perfect length for a barbers scissor over comb technique and other barbering techniques. When using long scissors you may also want to consider the weight. Longer scissors are great for blunt cuts and do need to have a little more weight behind them to help perfect those perfectly straight lines.

If you're a hair stylist who focuses more on short hair cuts, like pixies and mens hair, you may be considering a pair of short scissors. The short blade makes it easier to cut smaller details into your haircuts. Short scissors may give you more control, and comfort when cutting around ears or neckline.

So what's the difference?

If you haven't yet determined whether you want heavy or light hair cutting scissors, we will summarise it for you ! Lightweight scissors are a must for comfort and ease when cutting. That being said, all scissors do need a bit of weight behind them so you can cut through your clients hair with ease. That is why we recommend knowing which handle, size and steel you want your scissors to be, and go from there. Here at Scissor Tech we have all these options available to you. And the best part ? You get 7 day returns, so if your hair cutting scissors arrive and they aren't the perfect fit, you can send them back ! We want to make sure you have the perfect pair of comfortable, lightweight, ergonomic shears!
